Twitter isn’t giving up on its advertisers yet.
Recently, Twitter updated their character limit from 140 to 280 – but now they’re unveiling something new.
Twitter is experimenting with a new feature that will show how many people are “talking about” individual, popular tweets.
The new metric will appear under embedded tweets when they appear elsewhere on the web, replacing the retweet and replies totals.
Whilst this probably just an experiment, it is still part of Twitter’s ongoing attempts to explore new ways of providing more context around tweets and to simplify metrics.
The idea is to effectively simplify identifying how much engagement there is around a particular tweet.
The simplification of this information, especially in embeds, where new users or advertisers may not be as familiar with the platform, is a great way to ensure its internal success measures are more easily understood.
As with all of its experiments, there’s no guarantee that this will ever roll out across all users, but it’s an interesting look at the thought process around engagement metrics overall.
