IGTV Has Landed

Instagram has been rolling out a lot of recent updates, the latest of which is ‘IGTV’, both a new feature of Instagram and a stand-alone app. The Facebook-owned app’s community has hit one billion users after 8 years of first being launched, a milestone that has coincided with the release of the IGTV feature.

What is IGTV?

IGTV is a new facet of the photo-sharing platform focused solely on video content of a longer form to the app’s previous 1 minute time length. The videos uploaded to IGTV will play vertically, as Instagram feels it fits more with how people “naturally” use their phones. The videos will also be able to be one hour in length, making it a serious contender for Youtube’s crown as the top video content platform online.

How does it work?

IGTV is available both as a feature on Instagram and as an individual app.

To access IGTV on the regular Instagram app, click the IGTV button on the upper right-hand side of the home feed within Instagram, near where the Direct Message button is.

To use the IGTV app, you need to have an Instagram account and be logged in. If you already have the Instagram app downloaded and logged in on your phone, IGTV will download needing only a confirmation that you’d like to use the app as the account you’re logged in as on Instagram. Once downloaded you can browse and view videos from those you follow, suggested videos and see what’s trending.

Once in IGTV, either via Instagram or the app, video from the ‘For You’ section of the feature will automatically start playing, from there you can swipe through videos in each of the fur channel categories, ‘For You’, ‘Following’, ‘Popular’ and ‘Continue Watching’. Above these categories is a search bar, where you can search for a user/channel from the whole of Instagram, regardless of whether or not you follow them.

You can comment on, like and share IGTV videos similarly to how you’d comment and like a post or Instagram Live session.
