If you follow us on Twitter, or if you are a regular social media user, you've probably heard about a new app called Periscope. Acquired by Twitter in early 2015 for a reported $100 million and launched in March, Periscope has already taken the world by storm. It's a simple concept, allowing users to live stream a broadcast from their phone's camera.
As soon as we heard about it, we had to give it a try. All you need to get set-up is a Twitter account and within minutes you can have an audience of 100+ people. This is no exaggeration, within seconds of going live you will see the viewers start to roll in. This is one of the reasons that it's so exciting. How many other social networks allow you to interact with hundreds of people instantly, as soon as you've signed up?
Periscope also allows users to comment in real-time on the stream they're watching. This is great as a broadcaster because you can get instant feedback from viewers to tell you what they want to see more of, as well as answering any questions they have.
Businesses have been quick to get involved too. Most are still testing the water but some brands are already using it to engage with their audiences. A brilliant example of how it can be used was demonstrated by Jaguar, Toyota, Mercedes and Nissan who unveiled 4 new cars on Periscope at the New York International Auto Show. Before the show had even started, they had given their audience a behind-the-scenes view of what they could expect to see. This is one of the most effective uses of not just Periscope but social media in general. Your audience want to feel valued and giving them an exclusive view or insight into your business is a great way to do this.
Live events are just one way you can use Periscope. In the last week, we've given people tours of the interesting places we've visited, hosted Q&As, as well as demonstrating to people around the world how to make a proper cup of tea. Periscope offers so many exciting opportunities to connect with people, it's completely up to you how you choose to use it.
The app is free to download but is currently only available for the iPhone, however an Android version is expected soon.
It's a really exciting app so we highly recommend getting involved! Head over to the App Store to download it and then come and follow us @Plus24Marketing. Be warned though, for some strange reason, Periscope users are obsessed with fridges...
